The word ‘Gond’ comes from ‘Kond’ which refers to green mountains. The tribal people living in the lush green mountains of Madhya Pradesh are referred to as Gondis. The Gond tribe is one of the largest tribal communities in India and is spread across various parts of the country including Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, Bihar, Maharashtra, Odisha, and Andhra Pradesh.
The tribe believes that seeing a good image brings lots of good luck to them. Therefore Gond tribal paintings are made on festivals and ceremonies such as Diwali, Karva Chauth, Nag Panchami, birth, marriage, etc.
To make this art form popular among art lovers, The Circle Community conducted a workshop on Gond Art with expert artist Aatmaram Shyam.
About The Artist
Aatmaram Shyam has been into art since his childhood and has been practising Gond Art since the age of 5 years. He is currently pursuing his Bachelor’s Degree in Commerce from Bhopal.
The Workshop Began
The workshop began with the hosts welcoming Aatmaram. Aatnaram introduced himself and his journey and explained the art form in detail. He started creating the artwork by drawing an elephant and some branches of trees. He proceeded to colour the elephant with blue colour, its trunk with orange colour, ear with yellow colour, and the branches of the trees with light and dark shades of green. He coloured the tail with yellow colour and drew strokes using navy blue colour. He also showcased some of his previous artworks and helped the participants with their queries.
Towards The End Of The Workshop
As the workshop progressed, the participants got involved in the artwork. They thoroughly enjoyed the process of creating the art and thanked Aatmaram for making the session fun and interesting.
The attendees were from different parts of the country. They also belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. The Circle Community, as always, was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.
