Suresh Dhurve

Gond artist Inspired by Nature Torch bearer of art

Every artist gets their inspiration from a source, for Suresh Kumar Dhurve, birds are more than subjects, they are memory, rhythm, and identity. Growing up in Patangarh - a central point of Gold culture, he recalls long afternoons spent identifying birds by their calls, tracking their flights across the horizon, and listening to village elders tell stories of how certain species were tied to gods and ancestors. These impressions never left him. When Jangarh Singh Shyam, the great innovator of Gond art encouraged him to paint, it was birds that came first to Suresh’s canvases, and they have remained there ever since.

His early works were full of vivid colour, the birds painted against Gond’s characteristic patterned backgrounds. But as his style evolved, Suresh began stripping his palette down, experimenting with monochromes. In his black-and-white works, birds emerge in quiet elegance, their wings etched in rhythmic detailing, their forms simultaneously fragile and strong. It was this distinctive language that earned him a solo exhibition at Bharat Bhavan in 2007, featuring 35 works that confirmed his standing as a leading Gond voice.

Since then, Suresh’s art has travelled widely, from Indian galleries to international platforms like the National Gallery of Canada. Yet his themes remain constant: flocks in flight, birds in nesting clusters, divine rhythms woven into avian form. His work is both deeply personal, rooted in his own memories of growing up, the universe around him and the Gond belief of being connected to nature.

Suresh Dhurve is a distinguished gond artist known for his compelling visual narratives that celebrate the rhythms of rural life and the richness of traditional Indian culture. Through his intricate detailing and vibrant palette, Dhurve brings to life village landscapes, age-old folklore, and everyday moments.

At the heart of this Gond art painting is a magnificent, flowering tree with expansive branches, representing the cosmic pillar or world tree that connects heaven, earth, and the underworld. Nature-inspired paintings are typical of Gond art! In this one, the tree’s crown is filled with birds and blossoms, suggesting fertility, harmony, and life force. A divine figure (likely Lord Shiva or Bada Dev) is seated in the tree’s upper branches, symbolising divine presence at the origin of life. The sun and moon are represented on the left and right, respectively. The roots of the tree plunge into a circular blue aquatic realm, teeming with fish. Water represents a foundational element in Gond cosmology. According to traditional Gond beliefs, life originated in water, and fish are often regarded as primordial beings. The lower half teems with domestic animals (cows, oxen, goats) and human figures engaged in daily village activities, suggesting the emergence of land, agriculture, and civilisation from the original water-based creation. The symmetrical layout and inclusion of multiple creatures is a symbolic representation of balance in nature and the interconnectedness of all life.

Why This Gond Painting Stands Out:

  • Deep Meaning: It visually encodes a Gond creation myth, making spiritual philosophy accessible through folk art.

  • Hand-painted by the tribal artist keeping the age-old tradition of Gond art alive.

  • Artistic Detailing: Intricate patterns, vibrant colors, and layered storytelling showcase the signature Gond technique.

  • A great Gift: This acrylic on canvas painting makes a great gift for art lovers.

The creation of Earth takes viewers on a journey to explore the spiritual and cultural beliefs of the Gond tribe through this beautifully executed canvas painting.
