Seven Horses
Kaushal Tekam
Born in the Gond-dominated village of Patangarh, Kaushal Prasad Tekam was surrounded by stories long before he learned to hold a brush. In his childhood, trees were not just trees, they were ancestral beings, guardians of the forest; birds were messengers, and animals were companions in both daily life and mythology. These impressions seeped deeply into him, and when he finally began painting, the imagery came naturally. As an artist Kaushal’s journey was shaped by guidance from Gond masters, including Anand Singh Shyam. He refined his technique, learning to weave the fine linework and dotted detailing that has become Gond’s signature. What sets Kaushal apart is his mastery of tonal contrast, particularly his use of layered blacks. By varying shade and density, he creates an almost sculptural depth, turning birds, fish, and trees into richly alive presences. His acclaimed work “A Collective of Birds” demonstrates this skill, an entire flock rising out of rhythmic patterns, simultaneously abstract and lifelike. Over the years, Kaushal’s paintings have travelled across India in exhibitions and art fairs. Each piece reflects not just his craft but his storytelling instinct — the forest as a world teeming with interconnected lives. His art is quiet but powerful, celebrating the Gond worldview where nature is divine, cyclical, and eternal.
Description
A blend of traditional style with modern contemporary subject, the ‘Seven Horses’ by artist Kaushal Tekam is an innovative take, experimenting in traditional Gond style subject. Thematically, his works revolve around the interconnectedness of nature, humans, and animals. Distinctively, he emphasises select elements within each composition by using varied inflexions of black to build intricate textures, a hallmark of his signature style. Kaushal Tekam’s Seven Horses is a striking depiction of movement and strength, where the seven horses come alive through vibrant colours and intricate details. Each horse is captured mid-motion, their powerful form portrayed with grace and energy, reflecting the freedom and vitality of the wild. The vibrant patterns and flowing lines create a sense of rhythm and unity, symbolising the dynamic force of nature.
Horses hold significant symbolic value and are believed to bring prosperity, success, and positive energy. The horses, especially when shown running together, represent progress, speed, and overcoming obstacles. They are often associated with the chariot of Surya Dev (the Sun God) and the seven days of the week, each horse representing a unique aspect of life. Horses rendered in greyish tones set against the colourful backdrop of the rising sun, flowing waters and the nature around create a visual balance in composition and colour harmony.
