Ambika Devi

Ambika Devi

Ambika Devi is a renowned Madhubani artist from Rashidpur village in Bihar. She has dedicated her life to preserving and promoting the centuries-old tradition of Madhubani painting, which is deeply rooted in the cultural and spiritual practices of the Mithila region.

Born into a family where folk art was passed down through generations, Ambika Devi learned the techniques of Madhubani painting at the age of 12 from her mother. Over the years, she has developed her own distinct style, blending traditional motifs with contemporary themes. Her artworks often depict Hindu deities, scenes from epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, as well as motifs from nature such as fish, birds, and trees, which symbolise fertility, prosperity, and harmony.

Ambika Devi’s use of natural colours, fine lines, and intricate detailing reflects the authenticity of Madhubani art. She skillfully balances the traditional katchni (line work) and bharni (filled) styles, making her works both vibrant and delicate. In recent years, she has also addressed social themes, weaving narratives of women’s empowerment and environmental awareness into her paintings.

Her contributions to Madhubani art have been recognised at both national and international levels, and her works have been exhibited widely. As a teacher and mentor, she continues to inspire younger generations to carry forward this art form, ensuring its survival and relevance in contemporary times. Ambika Devi’s art not only celebrates cultural heritage but also serves as a medium of storytelling, spirituality, and social reflection
