The Jungle Tales
Kaushal Tekam
Born in the Gond-dominated village of Patangarh, Kaushal Prasad Tekam was surrounded by stories long before he learned to hold a brush. In his childhood, trees were not just trees, they were ancestral beings, guardians of the forest; birds were messengers, and animals were companions in both daily life and mythology. These impressions seeped deeply into him, and when he finally began painting, the imagery came naturally. As an artist Kaushal’s journey was shaped by guidance from Gond masters, including Anand Singh Shyam. He refined his technique, learning to weave the fine linework and dotted detailing that has become Gond’s signature. What sets Kaushal apart is his mastery of tonal contrast, particularly his use of layered blacks. By varying shade and density, he creates an almost sculptural depth, turning birds, fish, and trees into richly alive presences. His acclaimed work “A Collective of Birds” demonstrates this skill, an entire flock rising out of rhythmic patterns, simultaneously abstract and lifelike. Over the years, Kaushal’s paintings have travelled across India in exhibitions and art fairs. Each piece reflects not just his craft but his storytelling instinct — the forest as a world teeming with interconnected lives. His art is quiet but powerful, celebrating the Gond worldview where nature is divine, cyclical, and eternal.
Description
Kaushal Tekam's artwork, A Scene from a Jungle, brings the animal kingdom to life. It showcases the beauty and depth of the Gond art style with striking elegance. The artist captures a jungle scene filled with vibrant life. It showcases the majestic lion, the mighty elephant, and the graceful deer, along with animals and birds. These creatures gather beneath a large tree, whereas the variety of birds are either perched on the branches or flying. The overall composition and arrangement of the animal forms are unique. As these animals stand exactly in the centre of the composition, the legs of the elephant are transformed into a fusion of a bird's neck and head, which is quite intriguing. The painting is full of movement and filled with colours, intricate patterns and exquisite linework. Every bird, animal and each part of the tree is rendered colorfully with thin lines. The artwork sits on a plain white background. It highlights wildlife harmony and celebrates the connection between nature and its inhabitants.
This painting is a visual representation of the Gond people's reverence towards nature. Artist Kaushal Tekam’s art explores the deep connection between nature, humans, and animals, with a signature approach that emphasises forms through detailed textural patterns.
