Gond Animals VII

Description

A constellation of animals unfolds across the surface, each figure composed through disciplined bands of parallel hatching that give the bodies both contour and internal gravity. Their forms are stylised yet assured: elongated limbs, poised torsos and carefully balanced heads that seem to listen as much as they look. There is no dramatic gesture, no theatrical movement. Instead, the composition rests in a state of contained energy, as though the animals share an unspoken rhythm that binds them together.

The monochromatic palette heightens the authority of line. Directional shifts in the hatching articulate muscle and structure, creating subtle dimensionality without departing from the flatness of the picture plane. Negative space is left open and intentional, allowing each figure to breathe while still participating in the collective order of the whole. The repetition of mark becomes meditative, building density through patience rather than ornament.

Suresh Dhurve works within the Gond tradition of Madhya Pradesh, where repetition is a method of understanding life as continuous and interconnected. In acrylic on paper, he constructs each animal from within, layering line upon line until presence accumulates. Gond Animals VII transforms familiar creatures into emblems of rhythm, balance and quiet strength, rendered through a visual language that is at once ancestral and distinctly contemporary.
