Ajrakh Block Printing
Hosted by
Abdul Jabbar Mohammed Khatri
About this experience
This experience brings you into the world of Ajrakh, a block printing tradition shaped by rhythm, repetition and natural dyes. Inside the workspace of Abdul Jabbar Mohammed Khatri the process moves with deliberate calm. Wooden blocks meet cloth in patterns built through symmetry and steady pressure. Colours are prepared using age old methods, each layer requiring patience before the next can settle. The craft carries history from the desert landscape where its deep blues, reds and blacks have been part of daily life for centuries. A small printed piece is created during the session, offering a quiet glimpse into a practice that relies on precision, timing and generations of knowledge. What it Covers; • An introduction to Ajrakh’s origins and its connection to traditional dyeing methods • A look at the carved wooden blocks and the geometric language behind their patterns • Insight into natural dyes and how each colour is prepared and fixed onto cloth • Exposure to the stepwise layering that gives Ajrakh prints their depth and character • An understanding of how motifs and repeats are aligned to build seamless designs
