Mahaveer Swami: The Miniature Artist Who Turned Precision into Poetry

Introduction and Early Life

Mahaveer Swami, born in 1959 in Bikaner, the State of Rajasthan, comes from the Traditional Bikaner Artist family, more commonly known to create and uphold the Indian Miniature Painting Tradition with its roots coming from the Bikaner School. Currently living in the same city, he is still known to continuously practice the art inside his studio building, which is approximately 300 years old, where he paints his journey of being an artist and contributor to Bikaner's cultural activities and communities.

Mahaveer’s training began in his early childhood with his father M. R. Swami and his grandfather M. D. Swami. Being able to achieve freedom, and also coming from a family with artistic background, Mahaveer has become a pioneer in the field of miniature paintings.

Academics and Learning

After his family training at home about art and painting in the 1960s, he later earned a Diploma in the year 1978 from Rajasthan School of Art (Jaipur) in the field of Painting & Sculpture, following another Diploma in Clay Modelling in the year 1979 all under the guidance of his mentor, late Shri Vedpal Sharma, also known as “Bannuji”. Till 1981, he learned the style of Indian Miniature Paintings under various Gurus of the Bikaner School.

His education made him more dedicated towards reviving the traditions of the Bikaner School of Painting, simultaneously exploring new contexts, subjects, expressions and forms of expressions.

Style of Painting and Works

Currently, Mahaveer Swami is known to be one of the finest traditional artists working in India whose brushwork reflects his disciplined practice and personal vision, also attempting to prove the fact that there is no real gap when it comes to contemporary and traditional as there is only and shall be art. He has also been known to revive the finest aspect of the very complex and sophisticated Bikaner School of Painting with a lot of originality and brilliance, which is unique among the various contemporary miniature painting artists.

Mahaveer as a traditional painter is unique, having the artistic skill and ability to differentiate when it comes to telling apart what is supposed to be ordinary and what is to be fine in its true aspect. He also possesses the skill and art of precisely replicating other paintings with absolute perfection.

He prefers the discovery of new expressions, proved by his creation of a series of paintings based on Indian women’s daily routine life and living, which is often considered as a rare theme, unexplored by miniature painting artists.

His style of working is heavily influenced by the studies he made about the Mughal and Rajasthani Miniatures, making the subject matter in his paintings to be all drawn from the Indian Mythology. Other themes often revolve around the lifestyle of holy men and women and even daily life of the Indian women. As an artist who finds his subjects by observing around, he prefers to travel to annual festivals in Rajasthan, one such as in Ajmer and other locations to study faces of the attendees and so he can find art in them.

His striking work that revolves around ascetics and mystics comes from his spiritual and emotional feelings that were developed during his childhood, where he got extremely captivated by Sufis and Pandits who used to visit his grandfather. As a child and an artist, he grew up without knowing the difference between these holy men and was rather captivated by the glow on their faces. All this highlights his true artist quality of being able to find art regardless of any boundaries, this again later still reflects in his work and paintings.

His masterpieces often include miniature paintings inspired by his on-site sketches, avatars and incarnation intricate artworks that showcase Bhagwat puran godly incarnations, and the Radha-Krishna and Ras Leela interpretation as well.

His book ‘The Art of Bikaner’ is a compilation of 60 paintings, all executed in the Bikaner style, and all the work been clearly impacted by the Mughal traditions in areas of detailed depiction and portrayal of anatomy and rich-coloured palette, making the book a prominent proof of Mahaveer’s art and work.

Awards and Recognition

Mahaveer Swami is known to achieve 15 major awards in the field of art and all for his major contribution in the same, which includes the National Award by the Government of India named as ‘Master Craftsman Award’, the ‘Sanskriti Award’ by the then President of India in the year 1992, followed by ‘Rajiv Ratna Award’ in Bikaner during 2002 and the highest award ‘Kalavid’ in the year 2023, given by the Lalit Kala Academy in Rajasthan. His prominent awards also include the 2013 ‘Jury Award by Cultural International Festival of Miniature & Illumination’ award, Algeria.

Moreover, since the year 1986, Mahaveer’s work has been exhibited in more than 60 galleries of India including Mumbai, Bangalore, Pune, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Jaipur, and internationally in Paris, Japan, Australia, Thailand, Belgium, Hong Kong Jerusalem, Singapore, the U.S.A., Spain and Shanghai. His work is known to be a part of hundreds of museum collections (such as the Museum of Sacred Art in Belgium), and even private collections and galleries in India and internationally.

His collections in India include the Gallery Mansur (New Delhi), and groups like the Poddar Group, Modi Group, Bajaj Group, Birla Group, Tata Group, Ambani Group, Arora Group, Seagrams Group and even the Somani Group. International Collections include Sackler Art Gallery (New York), Rain-Beau Art Gallery (Jerusalem), Van Gelder Jewellery (Amsterdam), and even the World Erotic Museum (Berlin). His permanent collections consists of Belgium - Museum of Sacred Art, Mumbai - Ma Passion Art and Heritage Corp. Ltd., Algeria - Cultural International Festival of Miniature & Illumination, Bengaluru - Museum of Art and Photography and others.

Apart from this, his training programs at national and international level has given the miniature paintings a profound recognition and position in the global field of art.
