About the Artist

About Born in Vasna, Gujarat, Vasant Manubhai Chitara is an 18th-generation Mata ni Pachedi artisan, who was especially fascinated by kalam work after being introduced to the Mata ni Pachedi art when he was just 10 years old. Vasant believes that since the art form was a family tradition, it was in his blood and he never had to struggle to learn it. Vasant Chitara’s words ring true since his mastery of the art form gained him the Shilpaguru title in 2009 besides several other awards.

Each and every member of his family practice Mata ni Pachedi. While this art form was traditionally limited to decorative hangings, the growing demand from the market has led Vasant's family to expand its reach to include items like sarees, dupattas, and wall accessories.

Currently, Vasant shares his expertise in the art of Mata ni Pachedi by teaching the painting style in various design institutes. Additionally, he mentors and guides emerging artists from the new generation, seamlessly integrating them into his own practice.

When questioned about the future of Mata ni Pachedi, Vasant exhibits a firm resolve that his family will continue to preserve this 300-year-old ancestral tradition. However, he also acknowledges that the future of this craft rests on the changing demands of customers.
