Warli art is the representation of the Warli tribal community. Warlis stay in the North Sahyadri Range of Maharashtra and Gujarat. The Warlis worship Mother Nature. Elements of nature are often the focal points in Warli painting. Traditionally, clay walls of the houses were the focus of these paintings. However, in the contemporary world, they have become a part of modern art and can be drawn on the canvas. Shreya Gokarn & Janhavi Mallapur conducted this workshop with utmost enthusiasm and gave a small presentation on Warli culture before explaining the art form.Ā
The beginning of the workshop
As most of the participants were new to the Warli art form, Shreya and Janhavi started the workshops with the basics. They taught the participants how to make different stick figures. Using simple geometrical shapes such as square, circle, and triangle was the technique. Once the base of the stick figure was established, they explained another technique. This was to differentiate between a man, a woman, girl, boy, baby, old man, and old woman. As the Warli community is close to nature, they demonstrate how to draw trees and shrubs, animals like dogs, monkeys, dear, and horses.
The participants were quite enthusiastic and were making most of the workshop by quickly learning the new art form.
Towards the end of the workshop
Shreya and Janhavi taught all basic elements of Warli art. After getting a smooth hand on the basics, participants created a bookmark where the Warli communityās life is depicted. It includes gathering at the community fair, mining yoga routine, group dance, and a household chore.
The participants had fun throughout and by the end of the workshop, they were happy to have learned about a new community and their art and culture!
