Tie and dye is an ancient resist-dyeing technique. The process of tie and dye typically consists of folding, twisting, crumpling, or pleating a fabric and then dyeing it, which produces different textures through dyes. The fabrics are tied with threads or rubber bands, and these manipulations prior to the application of dyeing are called resists. Tie and dye are known for the use of saturated primary colours in bright shades and bold patterns. These beautiful and bold patterns may include spirals, mandalas, circles, stripes, etc. To make this art form popular, The Rooftop Community conducted a Tie-Dye Workshop with expert artist Soumya ‘Jeet’ Gupta.
About The Artist
Jeet Gupta is a passionate artist and an expert in Tie & Dye art. After completing his graduation from NIFT in New Delhi and working for a corporate fashion house as a fashion designer for five years, Jeet wanted to create something of his own which was stylish yet comfortable fashion wear and that is how he ventured into the world of this dynamic art form.
The Workshop Began
The workshop began with an introduction of Jeet and his journey into the world of art and fashion. Jeet introduced the Tie and Dye art form and talked about its history. He took a plain white fabric and created spirals by twisting, plaiting, and folding it. He created a water mix of yellow, red, and black colors. In order to create a rainbow tie and dye, he added yellow, green, orange, red, blue colors to the mixture, followed by black to darken the shade. He then dipped the fabric into it to create colorful patterns onto it.
Towards the end of the Workshop
Soumyajeet taught different patterns of Tie and Dye and kept all the participants engaged and hooked to this creative colorful art form. He showed his created Tie and Dye outfits that had different patterns. The host and the participants were delighted to see the artwork. The host thanked him for sharing his knowledge of this creative art form.
The attendees were from different parts of the country. They also belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. The Circle Community, as always, was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.
On this note, here’s us signing off until next time!
