Pichwai Painting Workshop With Nidhi Belani

Pichwai Painting Workshop With Nidhi Belani

Pichwai Painting is a traditional art of painting the portraits of Lord Krishna and the subjects related. These subjects are cows, lotus, and Gopis. The Pichwai art originated in Rajasthan. It is one of the most reputed art forms of India. It can be found hanging on the walls of the Nathdwara temple in Udaipur. In this masterclass, Nidhi will introduce us to the modern way of doing Pichwai Painting.

The beginning of the workshop

Ditching the traditional form of painting on cloth, Nidhi opted to advance the Pichwai Painting. She used the regular art sheet, using the regular stationery, without compromising on the design and the final outlook. The workshop began by drawing the 18×18 centimeter square sheet and then drawing the main subject inside the square.

The center subject for this workshop was Lord Krishna’s favorite animal – Cow. Keeping in mind the participants of various art levels, Nidhi explained the basics of drawing. She started with the cow and other intricate elements like the banana plant, moon, lotus, and many similar details. Once the sketch was ready with the pencil, the next step was to highlight the outlines with the art pen.

Towards the end of the workshop

Before our participants could finalise their sketch, Nidhi shared constructive feedback with each of them. She also gave them tips for improvisation. After highlighting the drawing, it was time to fill the bright colours that can be spotted from the distance. Following the principles of painting, colours were filled in the large spaces first and details were worked upon later. Even while filling the colours, Nidhi shared tips like the direction of color strokes with a light hand. The painted picture was ready with the minute details like cow’s eyes, ornaments, texture on leaves and flower petals. By the end of the workshop, everyone had a modern version of Pichwai painting ready from the comfort of their homes!
