The art of paper designs has evolved from traditional Chinese patterns to a variety of other patterns. Different cultures have adopted and inserted their own designs that have broadened the reach of this art form. To learn more about this craft, the Rooftop Community conducted a paper cutting workshop with Pratima Chavan. 

About The Artist 

Pramita is from a small town named Dhule in Maharashtra. She is a teacher by profession but an artist by heart. She developed her skills and love for art since childhood. She has indulged in many art forms before diving into paper cutting. Since 2013, she focused on paper cutting which makes her feel happy and creative. Her passion contributed to her venturing it into Pratima’s art gallery. Even after all these experiences, she is still as curious as before to learn and grow. 

The Workshop Began

Not drawing but cutting a piece of paper is also a mesmerizing form of art. As a teacher, she has a habit of giving a brief introduction about her art before starting off with the artwork. She talked about the history and origin of paper art. And for the session, she had instructed them to bring a paper cutter but also displayed the blade that professional paper-cutting artists use. 

For the workshop, Pratima chose a delicate and intricate 2D design. She began cutting the enclosed parts and then moved towards the center, cutting out the white portion of the design. While geometric parts are easier to cut circular designs need much more accurate cutting. The entire process is satisfying and therapeutic. 

Towards The End Of The Workshop

Some tips given by her were avoiding using plastic that creates friction and may lead to tearing the paper. She also encouraged them to take reference designs from sites like Pinterest to learn more. Finally, as Pratima should her art book, everyone was astonished which was a priceless moment of the workshop. 

The attendees were from different parts of the country. They also belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. The Rooftop Community, as always, was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.
