Oil pastel is a medium that creates an almost impasto effect while drawing. Oil pastels can be used on many surfaces to give them a dramatic look. Many artists enjoy the texture that oil pastels leave and have fun exploring different ways to use it in the artwork. To learn more about this familiar art form, The Circle Community conducted a workshop with Krishna Kulkarni.
About The Artist
Krishna is an artist from Pune and is very passionate about drawing, painting and teaching. She has excelled at many art forms like Madhubani, coffee painting, aboriginal art, warli, etc. She has been conducting workshops for the past four years and enjoys the experience of teaching and learning through it.
The Workshop Began
Oil pastel carving is an easy technique that many people are familiar with. Krishna came up with the idea to draw a vivid peacock feather using this art form. She used crayons on a plain sheet of paper to do so and advised not to use wax crayons as they don’t give a finished look.
Firstly, she started colouring a circular shape in the centre of the sheet. Krishna instructed everyone to apply immense pressure to get a dark shade. Later she gave it an orange border and surrounded it with a blue coloured oval. For the strands of the feather, she used a variety of colours like red, green, orange, after which she coloured the entire sheet with black oil pastels. Lastly, she used a scale to scrape or inscribe a feather shape onto the paper, the result of which was a flamboyant feather with intricate details.
Towards The End Of The Workshop
This artwork reminded everyone of their childhood when the most prominent medium was oil pastels. The attendees enjoyed the session and everyone re-created the art in their own style. They complimented each other’s work and altogether appreciated Krishna for a lovely session.
The attendees were from different parts of the country. They also belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. The Circle Community, as always, was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.
