Newspaper Weaving & Kalamkari Faces Workshop By Janhavi Mallapur

Newspaper Weaving & Kalamkari Faces Workshop By Janhavi Mallapur

Newspaper weaving is the craft of weaving a basket out of newspaper. And Kalamkari painting is a hand block printing on silk and cotton material using a turmeric ‘kalam’ which means pen. Both art forms are exclusive and intensive. Therefore, especially for our Circle members, Rooftop curated a fusion series of Newspaper Weaving and Kalamkari Faces Workshop for two days by Janhavi Mallapur.

Janhavi is a self-taught artist who not only is working with different art forms but has been in the Bollywood industry as a production designer. Her keen eye for art and expertise made her in association with the Young remembrance group as an educator.

Newspaper weaving and Kalamkari Faces Workshop Began

Janhavi started this fusion workshop on day 1 with a newspaper candle which is quite interesting to reuse the old newspapers. This creative tweak to a newspaper was really what made the session interesting. She detailed every step. From cutting out strips to finally assembling them, Janhavi made the process a fun way to learn and educate oneself regarding newspaper weaving.

Towards the end of the Workshop

As it was a fusion workshop, it went for two days. On the second day, Janhavi showed a well-detailed process of Kalamkari Faces making. The process itself took a lot of time and towards the end, she answered all the popping queries of the attendees. Janhavi showed her preferred pens and materials for this art form.

The attendees were from different parts of the country and belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. Rajasthan studio as always was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.

On this note, here’s us signing off until next time!
