Gond is a traditional art form of Madhya Pradesh that is done by the tribals of Chhattisgarh. It’s slightly different from other traditional art styles. Tribals never had the technique to draw perfect art designs, they created whatever looked artistic to them. As the tribals lived and worshiped the forest, this art is all about flora and fauna. To learn more about this art, The Circle Community conducted a workshop with Anju Varma.

About the Artist

Anju is an IT professional-turned-art enthusiast. Twelve years ago, she quit her job and began her art journey. Apart from being a certified art professional, she is also into interior designing and Kathak dance. She conducts various workshops to teach different forms of art as she believes that it is therapeutic in these troubled times.

The Workshop Began

Anju described Gond art with the beauty of imperfection and the uniqueness of each attribute. She started off by drawing a family of deers resting under the tree. The tree trunk connected to the deers and she mentioned that all elements of Gond art are connected to each other. Along with this, she drew various birds on the tree and a graceful peacock.

She mentioned how this style of art gives the liberty to draw and express. All one has to keep in mind is the design they wish to draw. Everything is merged into nature.

After completing the illustration, she began painting with bright shades of acrylics. She then drew deers coloured in alternative dark and light shades with intricate patterns with black lines.

Towards The End Of The Workshop

She displayed some of her previously designed artworks to give the attendees a basic idea about Gond art. She was amazed by the artwork done by the attendees and encouraged them to learn more about it.

The attendees were from different parts of the country. They also belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. The Circle Community, as always, was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.
