Over the years, coffee has become a very interesting form of medium for painting. It is a monochromatic form of art where a single brown colour is used in different shades. This form of art is soothing as it relaxes you with a beautiful aroma. To discover more about this art, The Circle Community conducted a workshop with Gayathri Ashok.
About The Artist
Gayathri is a self-taught artist who loves to explore various art forms. While shouldering the responsibility of her family and career, she took a break from art. But she restarted her journey with art five years ago and considered herself a student. Gayathri has also been honoured with a Kala Nilayam Award. She believes that art helps her achieve serenity in life.
The Workshop Began
To begin with, Gayathri drew a flower and mandala combination on a canvas board. She advised everyone to use yellow carbon paper to trace. She made a painting solution with instant coffee powder and water. Since coffee will only give out brown colour, it is very important to focus on creating different shades.
She began painting with an outline to the flower with a medium shade. She used a lighter shade to give a thicker border on the inner parts of the petals. Later, she illustrated the shading technique to give each petal a stunning effect. Moving to the mandala, she used a similar technique and gave systematic instructions to avoid any unwanted smudges. To make the drawing pop up, she gave a little background hue to the canvas.
Towards The End Of The Workshop
The attendees were overwhelmed to see such a decorative outcome using coffee as paint. Everyone was excited to share their own artwork and looked forward to painting more such designs.
The attendees were from different parts of the country. They also belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. The Circle Community, as always, was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.
