Mithila artwork is made by the Maithili women of Nepal and goes back to the 7th century. The art form has been passed from generation to generation ever since. Mithila painting also known as Madhubani art in India and is a traditionally designed painting created by the women of various communities in the Mithila region of Nepal and India. As the former capital of the kingdom of Mithila, Janakpur has emerged as the center for both preserving and promoting this ancient art. Originally the womenfolk of the village drew the paintings on the walls of their home with fingers, twigs, brushes, and matchsticks as a depiction of their thoughts, hopes, and dreams.

To make this art form popular among art enthusiasts, The Rooftop community conducted a workshop on Bookmarks in Mithila Art with expert artist Juhi Prakash.

About The Artist

Juhi completed her graduation with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Chandigarh. She also has an interest in sketching and modern painting. In fact, she has been passionate about painting since school. She now conducts workshops to pass on her knowledge of painting to art lovers.

The Workshop Began

The workshop began with an introduction of Juhi and her foray into the world of art. Juhi greeted all the participants and introduced the art form. To create the artwork, she first took a bookmark and drew circles, flowers and some fishes. She continued sketching on the bookmark and outlined the designs in black, further colouring it in different shades. She showed her Mithila artworks to all the attendees and spoke about them briefly.

Towards The End Of The Workshop

Juhi taught the different patterns and techniques of Mithila art in a bookmark and made sure all the participants were engaged and enjoyed this creative and colourful art form. The host and the participants were delighted to see the wonderful bookmarks. The host thanked Juhi for sharing her knowledge on this creative art form.

The attendees were from different parts of the country. They also belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. Rooftop , as always, was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.
