Pattachitra Art Workshop By Bhagyashree Sahoo

Pattachitra Art Workshop

Pattachitra Art Workshop: An ancient form of folk art endemic to Orissa and West Bengal, Pattachitra places storytelling squarely in the centre of its art. There are many people who believe that Pattachitra is the world’s first illustrated storybook. The name Pattachitra has evolved from the Sanskrit words – Patta which means canvas and Chitra meaning picture. It is all about rich colourful application, creative motifs and designs with the portrayal of simple themes, mostly mythological in depiction.

Rooftop curated a Pattachitra Art Workshop with Bhagyashree Sahoo to teach this traditional folk art. She is a self-taught artist who has been passionate about art since childhood. Earlier she used to paint on stone and later she started practising Pattachitra art.

The Pattachitra Art Workshop Began

She began the workshop by talking about the artform Pattachitra. On a paper, she started drawing simple circles and eventually drew a basic outline of the artwork. The participants were fast learners and drew along with her. All the participants were making this artwork for the very first time but they quickly grasped the technique of drawing it. The next step was to paint the drawing, so she started painting with beautiful watercolours. With slow and steady brush strokes, within no time she painted the whole artwork. Next step was to draw the detailing of the artwork which is the most important part of Pattachitra art. Bhagyashree slowly and steadily showed how to paint the details of the artwork. Along with her, all the participants also drew the detailing of the painting and  completed it timely by the end of the workshop.

Towards The End Of The Workshop

After finishing, the participants showed their final artwork to Bhagyashree and impressed her with all their beautiful paintings. Everyone learnt a new form of art in the workshop and absolutely nailed it.

We at Rajasthan Studio organise such different and innovative workshops daily so that everyone stays productive and creative, even in these uncertain times.
