Graphite pencils are made by mixing and grinding graphite and clay as it is then covered in wood. The proportion of the graphite and wood mixture determines the hardness and darkness of the pencil. Graphite Shading is the process of adding value in order to create an illusion of form, space, and light in a drawing.
To make the art form popular among art enthusiasts, Rooftop conducted a Graphite Shading Workshop with Sana Santosh.
About the artist
Sana Santosh is a self-taught artist; her mother and husband have been supportive of her passion and her love of art. She hails from the UAE and shares her knowledge and experiences about art with people through workshops.
The workshop began
The workshop began with an introduction of Sana and her journey as an artist. Sana welcomed the attendees and gave an insight into the art of graphite shading.
Sana began her artwork by drawing the roof of the house, window, and doors. She started shading the roof with a lighter shade and the window and door with a darker shade. The fences and the pine tree were painted in a dark shade. She sketched the branch of a tree and a bird flying over it. She also advised to cover the artwork while working on it in order to prevent it from getting smudged.
Towards the end of the workshop
All the attendees happily showed their landscape shading to Sana and were proud of their artwork as they had a lovely time bringing out their inner artists. The attendees had a lovely time learning about graphite shading and polishing their creative and artistic skills.
The attendees were from different parts of the country and were enthusiastic during the session.
The participants were from various age groups who learned the art form in a very short period. The host asked Sana to pose for a group picture and concluded the fun workshop.
On this note, here‘s us signing off until next time.
