Godna Madhubani Workshop With Soojata Arora

Godna art

Godna is the traditional Indian art of tattooing. This art form is popular among tribal societies that belong to northern and central India. The popular patterns in Godna art are floral and geometric designs, horses, elephants, scorpions and peacocks. To spread awareness about this art form, The Rooftop community conducted yet another innovative art form with artist Soojata Arora.

The Workshop Began

Soojata thanked the host for her introduction and started the workshop with the introduction of the types of Godna, which is inspired by the tattoo made by the tribal people. She guided and explained the steps for the making of the art. Arora created different types of patterns such as leaves, elephants, tortoises, birds and trees, and taught pencil techniques for the colouring and visual aspect of the designs.

Soojata taught colouring, gave suggestions and answered the participants’ questions. She shared how she has been learning the art form since she was 12. She has been teaching this art form for 25 years and explained the importance of having a mentor in one’s artistic career. The host thanked Soojata for sharing her knowledge about Godna art.

Soojata said that one can quickly learn this art form through Google and Youtube. She had a smiling face throughout the workshop.

The attendees were from different parts of the country and belonged to other age groups, but were united by their love and passion for art. Rooftop, as always, was successful in curating an informative workshop and innumerable memories.
