Cheriyal Painting Workshop with Surbhi Sethia

Cheriyal Painting

Cheriyal paintings are the pictorial presentation of scenes from Indian mythological epics such as Ramayana, Mahabharata, Garuda Purana, Krishna Leela, Markandeya Purana and other mythological scripts. Cheriyal paintings are very similar to other folk paintings eg Pattachitra, Phad painting, and the likes as they also act as a visual medium for storytelling. Cheriyals have mythical narratives.

About The Artist

Surbhi is from Hyderabad and an emerging artist, who is pursuing BFA in painting. Her inclination toward arts lead her to pursue a degree in fine arts as a subject of study and took art classes during her school holidays.

The Workshop Began

Surbhi greeted all the participants and thanked the host for the lovely introduction. She first started sketching Lord Krishna, a lady devotee and a man holding a stick as Lord Krishna is known for holding the Govardhan parvat with his little finger. She then continued to colour Lord Krishna in shades of blue and yellow for his ornaments and concluded the workshop by showing the artwork of Cheriyal painting of the same.

Towards the end of the workshop

Surbhi sketched and painted a beautiful Cheriyal Painting of Lord Krishna holding the Govardhan Parvat in his hands and a devotee holding it with a stick, a cow standing and a devotee folding hands to the Lord. This Cheriyal painting narrated the story of Krishna lifting Govardhan Parvat. All the attendees appreciated her artwork and showcased their co-created Cheriyal paintings to Surbhi. The host thanked Surbhi for teaching Cheriyal painting.

The attendees were from different parts of the country. They also belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. Rooftop, as always, was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.

On this note, here’s us signing off until next time!
