Cherial Art Workshop With Saikiran Varma Dhanalakota

Cherial Art

Cherial Art has a 400-year-old history predominantly in Telangana. This showcases how artistic our ancestors were. It is upon us to spread this art beyond borders and allow it to gain back its stature. Cherial paintings are very similar to other folk paintings, say Pattachitra, Phad paintings, etc. They also act as visual aid for storytelling. They are made on a long vertical piece of cloth in a narrative form. To give our Circle Members the experience to learn and enlighten themselves about this traditional art form, Rooftop curated a special Cherial Art Workshop and invited Saikiran Varma Dhanalakota.

Saikiran Varma Dhanalakota has done his Bachelors in Fine Arts. He has been practicing the Traditional Art form Cherial Scroll Paintings, Sawdust Dolls & Masks for many years. His artistic instincts come from his family. His love and talent for art has gained him a lot of praises. He is an awardee of Telangana State Award 2017.

Cherial Art Workshop Began

The Workshop began with a short introduction of the artist who also gave an abundance of knowledge of the art as well as its history. Moving on, Saikiran starts with composition, making a figure of a woman and her body parts who is draped in a saree.

After sketching we move further with colouring the background. We do the background colouring part with red along with the outline. Along with that artist also mentions all the colours to be used for decorating the woman figure. All the elements that were taught and painted by the artist have meaning and history to them that is eternal.

Towards The End Of The Workshop

We finished painting the woman figure and all her detailing by using beautiful vibrant colours. The traditional look of women includes her jewellery, attire, and features. Moving further, we outline the entire art piece in black colour which has a beautiful floral background. Lastly, we add some designs to the saree which adds a beautiful element to the artwork. All the artists were consumed and were elated by the experience throughout the session. The workshop ended with everyone showcasing their beautiful artworks.

The attendees were from different parts of the country. Also, they belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. Rajasthan studio as always was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.

On this note, here’s us signing off until next time!
