Warli Art Workshop: Warli art is an ancient tribal art belonging to the Warlis, an indigenous tribe or Adivasis who live in the western part of India. Its characteristics such as solid coloured backgrounds, mini-figures and a revolving story make it a whole. Rooftop curated a Navratri Special experience at Warli Art Workshop and invited Mrunal Diwakar.
She is a freelance artist with proven credentials in Warli paintings. Although familiar with various types of images, she chose Warli as her area of interest. She keenly developed the basics of this rustic art and quickly shifted to advanced forms of Warli on her own. For this, she has even interacted with Warli villagers and understood the intricacies of this art form.
The Warli Art Workshop Began
White being the colour theme of the day, all 40 participants were all set with their white traditional wear and colours. Mrunal began the workshop by sharing her insights about the traditional process of making warli art. She also briefed the attendees a little about the colours used in this ancient art form. Next, she drew the basic outline of the motif with white acrylic colour on a red painted background. She informed the attendees that rustic red and white are the primary colours used in this art form. She drew a typical village scenery and told the story behind each element or character. All the attendees enjoyed her story while working with her.
The curious participants also came up with several questions regarding the intricate art form. Mrunal answered all their questions promptly while adding detail to the artwork. She used very basic geometric shapes and lines to add detailing to the paintings which made the artwork look more lively!
Towards The End Of The Workshop
The enthusiastic attendees successfully finished their warli artworks within the time frame and excitedly displayed them on their cameras. Though this art form requires a lot of patience and practice, the attendees did a commendable job and gained lots of praise from Mrunal. All the attendees were from different parts of the country and belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform.
Rooftop as always was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.
