Pottery is one of the oldest forms of decorative arts and has been associated with the state of Kashmir for a long time. Therapeutic Pottery Painting on pottery is a therapeutic process that helps to create an outlet for emotions and self-expression. To learn more about the techniques of this art form, Rooftop conducted a workshop with Shafiya Shafi.
About The Artist
Shafiya is a full-time self-taught artist from Kashmir. She has done abstract Therapeutic Pottery Painting , resin paper mache, a traditional Kashmiri art, and is exploring various other art forms as well. Shafiya is the only mural artist in Kashmir and started her art journey three years ago. She currently works as an art instructor at a school.
The Workshop Began
Living in Kashmir, Shafiya noticed a decline in the pottery industry due to the pandemic. To give a push to this industry, she began painting pots and other clay items.
For the workshop, she brought a short circular vase to paint on. She gave it a white base layer before beginning with acrylic paint. Her theme was floral, so she went ahead to draw two large roses on either side of the vase with simple strokes of red shade.
After drawing the roses, she added some leaves and later drew smaller roses with a lighter shade of red mixed with yellow. This process was extremely calming as it required attention to detail. The remaining spaces were filled with yellow paint which was dabbled in order to give some texture. Lastly, she used a fine line brush to add black strokes around the rose for highlight.
Towards The End Of The Therapeutic Pottery Painting Workshop
Shafiya tries to innovate and explore new styles but also follows some traditional aspects. Apart from pot painting, she displayed some of her paper mache art and wall murals. The attendees were amazed by her talent and looked forward to trying their hand at it.
The attendees were from different parts of the country. They also belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. Rooftop, as always, was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.
