Powertex is an air-drying and eco-friendly medium of art that works well with absorbent materials. It is more than just a fabric hardener, rather it gives life to many ranges of craft. Powertex can be used to create sculptures, paintings, and jewelry. To learn more about this art, the Circle Community conducted a workshop with Kalpana Lapsiya.
About The Artist
Kalpana is a functional artist who loves creating art beyond craft. She has been working for more than 14 years as a candle artist alongside leading hotels, spas, and companies. She has also trained interior design students on Lippan art. Recently, she has been involved in upcycling furniture for her friends and family. The Workshop Began
In this workshop, Kalpana intended on teaching a basic structure for Powertex art. She worked on making a wired armature. With a 16 gauge wire, she gave an abstract shape to the model. She advised beginners to create a template to trace on to get the right shape. To make the structure sturdy, she added a metal rod. These steps are crucial to holding the framework.
After completing the abstract model, Kalpana molded crumpled foil paper to give the wires a robust shape. She covered the model with a layer masking tape for Powertex to hold on to the structure easily. Now that she finished building a framework, she went ahead to make a Powertex mixture. She instructed on the proportion to make a dough using Stone Art and Powertex. After she flattened the dough with a rolling pin, she sprinkled colours to give it an interesting look. Finally, she laid the dough onto the model and crafted an abstract art.
Towards The End Of The Workshop
This form of craftsmanship is complex but has endless possibilities to work with. To help participants learn more about various techniques, Kalpana exhibited some of her advanced designs like a fairy with lively wings. Altogether, the attendees were amazed to see such a unique form of craft and praised Kalpana for excelling at it.
The attendees were from different parts of the country. They also belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. The Circle Community, as always, was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.
