Pithora Painting Workshop with Jayashree Mahapatraa

Pithora painting workshop

Pithora art is practised by the Rathva community residing in Gujarat and some parts of Madhya Pradesh. Elephant is one of the main motifs as their heroic god Raja Bhoj sits on the elephant. Red, yellow, green and blue are the main colours of Pithora Art.

The Rathwas seek the guidance of Badva ( chief priest) to find a solution for his difficulty. The homeowner or the Gardhani generally takes the vow to paint Pithora. Lakhara or the artist is called upon to paint the Pithora in the front portion of the room. It is usually 8ft *11ft and can have 165 motifs.

The Workshop Began

The workshop began with Jayashree briefing about Ptihora art and how the design will be useful for home decor. She started drawing a Pithora style elephant on 4*4 sized coaster. She added a border. Firstly, she coloured the elephant motif with black. Other colours added were yellow, orange, leaf green and ultramarine blue. Dot patterns in the elephant made it appear unique and traditional. Brown border and double border of dotted patterns beautified the artwork further.

Towards The End Of The Workshop

Jayashree showed her other motifs  like the horse, deer and elephant. She narrated the tale of each motif being a vehicle of different Pithora gods respectively. The border of this painting should be very bright. The attendees co-created and also found it informative.

The attendees were from different parts of the country. Also, they belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. The Circle Community, as always, was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.
