What is the Inktober Challenge?

In 2009, Jake Parker created the Inktober challenge as a method of self-regulation and creating healthy art habits. Regular art practise can be hard, and we may find it difficult to commit to drawing every day or when we don’t feel like it. However, practise is the key to improvement, and Jake wanted to challenge himself to improve both his inking skills and his daily art habits.

The Inktober challenge consists of a simple premise- 31 drawings in 31 days. You could draw whatever you wanted to. But it’s hard to consistently come up with new ideas- sometimes the uninspired artist may even use it as an excuse to get out of practise. That’s why the Inktober account started creating official prompt lists each year. It isn’t compulsory to follow the prompts while attempting the Inktober challenge, and many artists even create their own prompt lists on a particular theme or topic.

We’ve decided to put a traditional spin on things and host an Inktober contest specifically tailored towards Indian folk and tribal art forms. This contest giveaway aims to increase awareness about these art forms and also foster the creative spirit in Indian artists. We’ll be holding three contest giveaways in October. There’s also a bonus prize for those dedicated and consistent artists out there, so keep reading to learn what it is.

The giveaway will take place exclusively on Rooftop’s Instagram page. We will post a reference image of a motif or a composition in the style of a particular tribal or folk art form. You will then be free to reimagine and redraw it with only black ink while sticking to the same art form. So if we share an Aipan design, you can reimagine it, but only in the Aipan style: so get familiar with the distinguishing features of the art form and its motifs. You’ll find that you’ll be able to be even more creative when you have to adhere to a set of rules. For information on each art style, check out Rooftop’s Artwiki or read any of our blogs on folk and tribal art forms.

What do I win with Rooftop’s Inktober Challenge?

You win free access to one of Rooftop App’s paid art workshops. That means you get to access premium content without paying a dime! You’ll be able to attend an exclusive workshop that will provide you with wonderful information on one of India’s folk or tribal art forms. Moreover, if you consistently participate in all three contests, you stand a chance to win a weekly subscription to Rooftop’s art workshops.

These workshops are conducted by extremely knowledgeable and experienced instructors, and the instructions, tips, and advice they provide are invaluable to anyone who wishes to progress on their art journey. You’ll learn new skills in these workshops and be able to apply them to your own artwork in new and unique ways.

What’s the Deadline for the Contest Giveaways?

So, here’s the timeline for Rooftop’s Inktober Giveway. There will be three contests held, each spanning the duration of a week. We’ll post the reference images on our Instagram in post format, along with a refresher of the rules of the contest, on each Tuesday. The giveaway will last until 11:59 p.m. on Sunday. The winner for that week will be announced on Monday, and then the next giveaway contest will begin on Tuesday.

So, to recap:

Contest 1: Tuesday, 10th October to Sunday, 16th October

Winner announcement: Monday, 16th October

Contest 2: Tuesday, 17th October to Sunday, 22nd October

Winner announcement: Monday, 23rd October

Contest 3: Tuesday, 24 October to Sunday, 29th October

Winner announcement: Monday, 30th October

What Are the Benefits of Participating in Rooftop’s Inktober Challenge?

There are many benefits that come with a challenge like Inktober. For one, it helps you develop discipline and self regulation skills. You begin practising more often, which helps you improve your art skills at a faster rate than you would have if you just drew whenever you felt like it. Thirdly, you begin to interpret concepts in increasingly creative ways and start thinking outside the box.

Adopting daily art habits will help you develop a better relationship with art. You’ll be more in tune with your art style and the kind of art you enjoy making. The more you draw, the more time you’ll have to try new ideas, styles, concepts, and techniques. You may discover that you enjoy doing a particular style or art form that you would have never tried if you didn’t keep practising and experimenting. As artists, we must keep growing and walking the path to self improvement. Rooftop’s Inktober Challenge is the perfect way to do that.

Are You All Set to Participate in #InktoberWithRooftop?

We love encouraging art lovers along their artistic journey. What better way to do that than to gift them with a learning experience? To everyone who will participate in this giveaway challenge: we’ll be cheering you on! So put in your all, and along with working hard on your art, make sure to appreciate your fellow artists as well.
