Phad Art from Rajasthan Workshop By Satyaki Chakrabarti

Phad is a type of scroll painting that narrates elaborate religious stories of local deities and gods. These are created as traveling or mobile temples, these traditional paintings were carried by priest-singers who would sing and perform stories of their local deities – Devnarayanj and Pabuji. To give our Circle Members the experience to learn and enlighten themselves about this traditional art form, Rajasthan Studio curated a special workshop and invited Satyaki Chakrabarti.

Satyaki Chakrabarti is a software developer by profession and a self-taught artist. His art journey started a couple of years back as a therapy to increase his focus. Over the last few years, he has tried his hands on various art styles like doodling, zentangles, mandalas, watercolour florals, line and wash, urban sketches, etc. but finally found his calling in the rich Indian Folk art forms like Odisha Patachitra, Bengal Patachitra, Kalighat Painting, Phad art and very recently Rajasthani miniature.

Phad Art from Rajasthan Workshop Began

Satyaki started the session by explaining what was the task for the day. He informed the attendees that they were going to make a gorgeous lady with two lamps in her hand. All the attendees paid attention and noted all the key points.

He started outlining the sketch with very intricate details. It was slightly complicated but he made sure that he was explaining all the steps. He went on to tell the attendees what is to be done inside the circle. Also, he made sure that she was responding to all queries and questions.

Towards The End Of The Workshop

Satyaki spoke about the different mediums that can be used to fill in the colours and advised the attendees on what would be the eBay alternative. He even displayed an artwork that he had created before. The attendees were very excited to showcase their work. The overall experience was very delightful and everyone enjoyed.

The attendees were from different parts of the country. Also, they belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. Rajasthan Studio as always was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.

On this note, here’s us signing off until next time!
