Night Sky Gouache Painting Workshop With Priya Verma

Night sky gouache painting

Water-colour and Acrylics are classic mediums that have been overtaken by the ‘in trend’ paints such as Gouache. Combining features of both these paints, gouache has become popular amongst artists. There is a variety of colours that gouache offers to make beautiful landscapes. To discover more, The Circle Community conducted a workshop with Priya Verma.

About The Artist

Priya is a self-taught artist from India and has been painting for the past two years. She loves nature and believes it to be her biggest inspiration. Nature is a teacher from which she learns and grows. A saying that goes ‘when colors come together, all they do is magic’ is what drives her to fill her canvas with the colours of her imagination.

The Workshop Began

More than paying attention to the technical aspects, Priya also wanted the attendees to have fun in the process of painting. Her theme was- Night Sky, wherein there was an arch in the middle with a galaxy-like sky behind it. She chose violet for a darker background effect and mauve and pink for a lighter shade, along with some yellow highlights to the sky.

Since gouache is water-based, she recommended using less water and making the paint thick enough to give it a matte effect. Before painting the background, she applied water on the surface to help the colours spread evenly. With circular motions, she blended the colours from darker to lighter shades. She taught them how to merge the colours in a natural-looking manner. With a thin brush, she drew an arch and filled it with black.

Towards The End Of The Workshop

Priya was overwhelmed to see that everyone followed through and enjoyed the workshop. She inspired them by showing some of her previous artworks and instructed them to find more such reference images that had a multi-coloured background with black elements in front of it. She suggested that the technique used would be easier for beginners to follow.

The attendees were from different parts of the country. They also belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. The Circle Community, as always, was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.
