Make Your Terrarium Workshop With Akshata Veeranna Kesur

Terrarium is the remarkable art of creating an aquarium for your plants. It gives an illusion of taking a visual look at underwater flora. A perfect addition to the botanic decor of your home. Hand-made terrariums can be of various forms and heights that suit your style. To explore more about this miniature garden art, the Rooftop Community conducted a workshop with Akshata Kesur.

About The Artist

Akshata started her journey with her passion to see seeds sprout into beautiful plants, which was the most beautiful moment in her life. So after she came across terrarium art, she tried her hand at creating one for herself. While working on it, she noticed some flaws like withering and yellowing of leaves and took note of every mistake she might have made along the way. This way, she grew more curious about terrariums and mastered the art with time.

The Workshop Began

Akshata started off by selecting a glass jar and placing stones or pebbles at the bottom of it. She placed a translucent/butter paper on it with small holes to help drain the water to the base of the jar. Then, she added a couple of inches of charcoal that would soak water, followed by a layer of cockpit sand. “The contrast layers will help sustain the plants for a longer time”, stated Akshata. She suggested keeping the terrarium away from sunlight and watering it only once a month so that it stays in perfect condition.

She taught everyone how to make solid rock textures using a mixture of POP and water by wrapping them in aluminium foil. After placing the mountain-like structures, she created an eye-catching waterfall effect with candle wax. Following a step-by-step process, she finally added a layer of moss and sprinkled water before closing the jar lid.

Towards The End Of The Workshop

Akshata responded to all the queries and suggested alternative materials for a cost-effective approach. Preparing a terrarium is quite a challenging task for a beginner. Despite this, one of the attendees co-created an admirable terrarium.

The attendees were from different parts of the country. They also belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. Rooftop, as always, was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.

On this note, here’s us signing off until next time!
