Lippan Mirror Workshop with Richa Khushwaha

Lippan Art

Lippan also known as Mud and Mirror Work is a traditional art form from Kutch, Gujarat, India. This work is limited mainly to the interior walls, it can be found on the outer walls as well. Lippan Work is mainly done by the women of the Rabari community. Rabari is the pastoral community of Kutch, living on the outskirts of its villages. There are no records available to know the exact past of this art. Lippan mirror work came to light of the modern world due to its intricate patterns and aesthetic perfection and has become the mainstream art of the world, decorating the walls of urban homes. To give our Circle Members the experience to learn and enlighten themselves about this traditional art form, Rajasthan Studio curated a special workshop and invited Richa Khushwaha.

Richa Kushohwaha is from Bhopal. She was passionate about painting since childhood so she completed her further studies in fine arts. She is most influenced by folk and tribal art. Richa even exhibits her artworks in exhibitions. She believes that as an artist, we should tell the whole world about our heritage and our culture because our country is rich in art and we must make it popular in the world and India also.

Richa began the Lippan Mirror workshop by giving all the attendees a brief introduction about what is Lippan art and its origin. She started with the art form and while showing the process she was even telling the attendees about how this art was made by the kutch women in the past.Richa was explaining how the clay should be molded to get a nice shape. She spoke about the alternatives attendees could use in case they don’t have needed materials. As the attendees were working with the mirror she was very patient fully explaining each step.
