Papercutting was first introduced by China in the 4th and 5th centuries. The Chinese developed the art of paper cutting and called it Chien-Chih. Paper cuts are created with thin red paper using traditional designs. Papercutting as art is known by various names such as scherenschnitte in Germany and Switzerland, Kirigami in Japan and Wycinanki in Poland. Paper cutting has a long history in Mexico where the craft is said to have originated from the Mayans in the 6th Century.

To learn more about his quirky art form, Rooftop conducted a culturally diverse art workshop with Khushboo Harshad Patel.

About the Artist

Khushboo Patel is a paper artist by passion and is from the city of dreams, that is Mumbai. She creates beautiful paper art on Instagram on her handle @mypapervoyage and also conducts workshops for paper arts. Patel has been doing paper cutting for the past 8 years.

The Workshop began

Khushboo began the workshop by drawing geometric shapes like circles, triangles and a rectangle in freestyle on paper. She then drew the sketch of the sunflower and taught the participants how to do the basic cutting. She also provided some quick and easy tips on cutting the paper. She further went on to show her Panda cutter design.

Towards the end of the workshop

Everyone had a lovely time as they enjoyed this traditional yet diverse art form and showed their creative paper cutting recreations. Khushboo also showed her artwork to all the participants and was delighted to see their artwork.

The attendees were from different parts of the country. They also belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. Rooftop, as always, was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.
