In Bihar, the local name given to applique works is Khatwa. Designer tents, designing women‘s clothes, canopies and shamianas are made from Khatwa. Contemporary Khatwa Applique is where the talent of the Bihar people is seen. The designs created are sharp, intricate and appealing in nature.
To make this art form popular among art lovers, The Circle Community conducted an engaging workshop on Contemporary Khatwa Applique with expert artist Nisha Shankar.
About The Artist
Nisha is an engineer turned artist and educator. She specializes in folk and contemporary art forms. Nisha takes art workshops both online and offline and showcases her artwork on her Instagram page by the name aura_arts. She has been passionate about Indian art forms and has been following them for 30 years.
The Khatwa Applique Workshop Began
The workshop began with an introduction of Nisha and her journey into the world of art. Nisha heartily welcomed all the attendees and gave an insight into contemporary Khatwa art.
Nisha explained the history and significance of Khatwa Applique to all the participants and started working on a black piece of cloth recreating one of her artworks. She first drew a white border and made a cutout of grass and a black tree, then made a cutout of the bird and the leaves with a multi-coloured cloth. She finished the art by creating beautiful dots.
Towards The End Of The Workshop
As the workshop progressed, all the participants showcased their Khatwa artwork to Nisha. The enthusiasm of the participants delighted her. Also their aesthetically pleasing & colourful artworks. The workshop ended on a positive and appreciative note.
The attendees were from different parts of the country. They also belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. The Circle Community, as always, was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.
