Coconut Shell craft is a famous craft in Kerala, especially in the districts of Kollam, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Wayanad, Malappuram and Thiruvananthapuram. Coconut crafts are manufactured in the South Indian states as there is a lot of coconut plantation due to geographical reasons. The states of Kerala, Tamil Nadu and other coastal states have a lot of skilled artisans who make coconut crafts. Coconut shells are used to make decorative and organic products such as bowls, vases, teapots, and hookahs. This craft is also practised in Goa, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Pondicherry and parts of West Bengal.
To spread awareness about this unique art form, Rooftop organized a Coconut Shell Workshop with expert artist Tanishqka Rajesh Kuchik.
About the artist
Tanishqa loves calligraphy, drawing, painting and sketching. She is from the City of Dreams, Mumbai, and makes handmade jewellery. She has been painting since her childhood and has turned her hobby into a profession. Kuchik came across coconut shell paintings and created them with her individual touch.
The Workshop Began
The workshop began with an introduction of Tanishqa, who heartily welcomed all the attendees and thanked the hosts of the session.
Tanishqa spoke about how often we throw away coconut shells and how we can use them to transform them into decorative items and enhance their beauty. She started with the decoration for the outside of the shell and taught how to smoothen the outer shell of the coconut with hands, a knife, or by rubbing with sandpaper. Tanishqa also recommended the type of colours to be used and showcased her past creations. She also simultaneously answered all the queries of the attendees.
Towards the End Of The Workshop
As the workshop progressed, all the attendees showed their cute coconut shell artworks to Tanishqka. She was delighted to see the hard work and dedication behind the artwork and praised all the attendees. The attendees, in turn, thanked Tanishqa for her support and for making the session fun and engaging.
The attendees were from different parts of the country. They also belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. Rooftop, as always, was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.
On this note, here’s us signing off until next time!
