Celebrating the International Year of Millets with Phad Painting

Presented by Modern Public School, Shalimar Bagh, Delhi as a part of Phad Se Padh initiative

Teacher’s Experience

Phad Se Padh was a unique synergy of traditional arts and creative minds to redefine the new learning age. As an educator at the Modern Public School, I was privileged to be part of this groundbreaking initiative. It gave way to learning through the 700-year-old art form of Phad, helping channelise creative skills for a better tomorrow.

Millets were our chosen theme, since, the year 2023 has been declared the International Year of Millets.

The depiction of Phad along with the Bhopa and Bhopi, has helped develop a sense of cultural inquiry into the country’s young minds. The interdisciplinary approach brought Science and Social Science together. The making of the painting was an enriching experience for my team as a whole. It not only opened our horizons but also helped us to contemporise the art form while keeping the authenticity of the tradition intact.

Student’s Experience

Our experience with Phad painting was incredible. We got to learn so much about our traditions and how one can portray stories beautifully without having to say anything.

Phad is a style of religious scroll painting practised in Rajasthan. This style of painting is done on long pieces of cloth or canvas. The theme for our Phad painting was Millets, as this year has been recognised as the Year of Millets by the UN. Also, millets have been a staple in traditional Indian cooking. The painting depicted the journey of millets from being sown, grown, and harvested to being transported to different regions and making delicious meals.

I’m glad that I could learn about such an amazing art form and beautiful tradition.
