Rooftop – Where India Inspires Creativity

Abstract Painting And Paper-Cut Workshop With Komal Mishra

Abstract Painting And paper cut Workshop

The concept of paper-cutting art has changed a lot as artists like to improvise and experiment with it. There is no particular design that has to be followed and its endless creative freedom is what attracts people towards it. To fabricate such unique art, Rooftop conducted a workshop with Komal Mishra.

About The Artist

Komal considers art as her happy place and her childhood hobby that she now pursues professionally through her Instagram page- ‘happy tinnies’. She’s a marketing professional throughout the week and an artist by the weekend. She likes to experiment with different mediums and styles like watercolour, pen work, paper-cut art, canvas painting, sketching and craft. Her style is minimal and intricate, drawing inspiration from nature which helped her find an undying love for the colour blue.

The Workshop Began

Ahead of starting work on a fresh piece of art, Komal showed some of her previous reference artworks. Paper-cutting art was a fairly new concept, but she decided to dive right into it as she believed it wasn’t too complicated. She wanted to exhibit how we get to learn more as we experiment our way through. Starting off, she selected a paper that wasn’t too thick but sturdy enough. She drew a 10×10 cm canvas for putting together the pieces on it later.

The first design she went with was tree trunks that didn’t have to be geometric and were given free-hand cuts to look more realistic. Secondly, she made some longleaf cut-outs and bent them to give a graphic feel and also made a potholder for the same.

Komal believes that non-conventional colours suit this art. So she went ahead with watercolours to paint the pieces.

The trees were painted in blue shades and she added a bright pink potholder and mixed green leaves. She further illustrated a sunset on the final canvas and stuck all the pieces together.

Towards The End Of The Workshop

Paper-cutting art is a fun process full of creativity. The personal touch given by the attendees to their artwork was wonderful. Komal wanted them to explore more and add their own elements or designs while creating such art.

The attendees were from different parts of the country. They also belonged to different age groups but their love for art brought them together on a single platform. Rooftop, as always, was successful in connecting artists and curating a magical and positive vibe together.

On this note, here’s us signing off until next time!
